Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH)

What is IIH?

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) is a neurological disorder in which the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure within the skull is too high. It is also called Pseudotumor Cerebri.

Typical symptoms include: headaches, blurred vision, loss of vision, double vision, or swooshing or pulsing in the ears.

The diagnosis of IIH is made by first recognizing the typical symptoms of the condition. The neurological exam is normal with the exception of swollen optic nerves. Neuroimaging (CT, MRI) and a spinal tap are also needed to aid in the diagnosis and rule out other conditions that may cause similar symptoms.

How is IIH treated?

The treatment of IIH involves a multi-disciplinary team approach and often includes: weight loss, oral medication, optic nerve sheath fenestration, and possible neurosurgical shunt or stent surgery.
