Vision Loss

What are the most common
causes of vision loss?

The most common causes of vision loss include macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. These typically cause a slow, progressive loss of vision. Sudden loss of vision, however, is often more serious such as: retinal detachments, changes in blood flow (to the retina or the optic nerve), and inflammatory causes such as Giant Cell Arteritis.

What can be done for
vision loss?

The first step is to find the underlying cause. Causes that can be progressive and lead to permanent and irreversible blindness (such as giant cell arteritis) need to be diagnosed as early as possible and treated quickly. This helps prevent the progression and preserve what vision is left.
