What Is Strabismus Surgery?

This type of eye muscle surgery focuses on repositioning the eye muscles so that a patient’s eyes point in the same direction when moved. While some people are born with this condition, it can also develop as an adult due to factors such as disease or injury. Strabismus surgery focuses on repositioning the eye’s muscles so that both the left and right eye are aligned for their full range of movement. Not only does this provide an improved cosmetic appearance which can improve confidence, but it can improve other symptoms such as double vision or trouble with depth perception.

What Is Eye Muscle Surgery Like?

Strabismus surgery is a straightforward procedure for both children and adults, and we match the experience to ensure a minimum-stress time for all ages. The patient is under anesthesia the entire time to be completely comfortable. We make only minor incisions to reposition muscles detaching and reattaching them with precision and avoiding any damage to the eye or surrounding tissues.

Do I Need Strabismus Surgery?

The severity of symptoms from strabismus can vary significantly from one patient to the next. Patients usually seek treatment if the cosmetic concern becomes too great or if the symptoms (such as double vision) begin significantly interfering with daily life. It is common for kids to have the procedure, correcting eye misalignment at an early age to give them the benefits of the results at an earlier age.

The first step in addressing eye misalignment is going to be a consultation with Dr. Shah Vira. During this consultation, you will discuss your medical history and the current state of your eye health along with the concerns and symptoms you experience. She will also perform a thorough examination of your eyes to get a better understanding of what is going on and how best to go about providing corrective surgery.

Recovery &
Results

While recovering from eye muscle surgery is usually mild and short, there are a couple of unique aspects to this procedure. Some discomfort is normal for a couple of days, and most patients take this time off from school or work. Some redness at the eye corners is also normal and lasts about 2-3 weeks. Some reddish tears (tinged with blood) are normal for a day or two and nothing to worry about. A sense of scratchiness or that something is in the eye can persist for a couple of weeks too, but this gradually goes away. Lastly, some blurry vision is also normal for a week or two, as the brain is just catching up with the changes in visual perception. But after this, patients can fully enjoy the results of their newly aligned eyes!
